Our Climbing School offers the aspiring mountaineer a comprehensive overview of various techniques that begin to meet the challenges set forth by this, or any mountain. It serves as a great introduction or as a refresher if you haven’t been in the hills for a while. You will find that our guides are excellent teachers, relaying this information to you in an easy to understand yet comprehensively challenging manner. On this day, you will be introduced to a number of skills, from the simplest techniques of efficient mountain travel (rest-stepping and pressure breathing) through cramponing, roped travel, and ice axe arrest practices.
Participation in the Climbing School within the current season is required for joining our Summit Climb. During the Climbing School you will be asked to demonstrate that your fitness will allow you to climb safely, and that you are able to perform the new climbing skills proficiently. Climbers who are not able to summit will be given a day of training and great vistas. Remember its not the top that matters, its the climb.
Photo CD's will be available for all Climbers, for $35.00 per person.
A summit is as high as you make it, "TO THE SUMMIT." Certificates for Summits of all forms will be available at the CMR store when we return.
Our first priority is the safety of our participants to the best of our ability, and we will continue to assess each team member throughout the course of the school and the summit climb.
DAY 2 ITINERARY (SUMMIT CLIMB)
4:30 - 6:00 a.m. Breakfast, Pre-checks, secure the Camp, Head for the Summit or Vista Training, with continued schooling throughout the day. Team discussion and preparation for the days events will be conducted, including a thorough clothing and equipment check.
6:00-a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Lunch, Summit attempts, continued schooling, photo ops, Return to base camp. Team discussion will continue throughout the days events, No one climbs alone, we take care of each other all the time. Our Summit Climb takes place over the course of the first two days. On the first day we hike to the selected base camp and on the second day we make the ascent of Mount Adams or the Vista Training area. The hike from your pre-selected Base Camp to the Summit of Mount Adams and back to Base Camp, will take us most of the day. The hikes will travel through spectacular alpine zones, which later in the season are bursting with a fantastic flower displays, and onto the selected Snowfields of Mount Adams. All of the Glaciers and Snowfields are named after unique individuals and are a part of our local history. Grand vistas of the wooded lowlands and flanking glaciers will be seen. Groups typically climb for about an hour and then break for 10 to 15 minutes. Early that morning we don ropes, crampons, helmets, and grab our ice axes. After this alpine start, our teams begin the rising traverse across the Pre-Selected Glacier and then ascend to the Summit. The actual route choice will be determined by many factors and will be left to the professional discretion of your Guides. The steeper Terrain will be the physical crux of the route. The remaining slopes and hours are whittled away as we zig and zag through the crevasses of the upper mountain. It is truly a spectacular climb, and one that you are likely to remember for a while to come. As we make our ascent, we climb steadily for one to two hours at a stretch followed by a 10 to 15 minute break. At the top, we will have Photos and discuss the Miners cabin on the Summit, while eating lunch. The summit of Mount Adams is very spectacular. A large cinder cone dominates the summit, with the Klickitat headwall to the east. You will smell sulfur rising out of the cavernous summit vents. After spending some time on top 12,267 feet (depending on the weather), we begin the descent to base camp. This takes about half the time of the ascent, and definitely requires some effort.
4.00-900 p.m. Dinner, Backcountry entertainment, Light Personal Hygiene, Pre-checks for Decent day and more class room instruction.
DAY 3 ITINERARY (DESCENT)
6:30-a.m to 4.00 pm. Breakfast, Camp clean up, Lunch on and off your feet, Descend to selected Trailheads & Shuttles.
4.00-5.00 p.m. Shuttle back to Trout Lake, equipment turn ins. (For those with flights and Lodging issues, please make GOOD prior arrangements with CMR and your Guide.) The duration of the climb depends on many variables including snow conditions, the time of the year, the route conditions, the weather during our climb, the temperature, etc. Those variables often affect our arrival time at Trout Lake, which might vary dramatically from climb to climb. For this reason we do not recommend scheduling an airline flight before 11 p.m. on the last day of your climb.
Some Say "Go Fast & Light," We Say " Go Ready & Steady." There Are No Shortcuts To The Top, Or in Between For That Matter.
